How did Coretta Cope?
by Kokayi Nosakhere
It is January 30, 1956. It is 9:15 pm.
You are a 29 year old new mother named Coretta Scott.
You are waiting on Martin to finish speaking at First Baptist Church and get home.
You hear a car drive up. You hear a door open. You hear a thud on your front porch.
Then, the bomb blows a hole in the front porch floor where it lands. A support beam is cracked.
Two month old Yolanda baby wakes up screaming.
Martin shows up at 9:30 pm. He cannot tend to you, because 300 angry Negroes are at the porch.
Martin has to go preach to them, while tears are streaming down your face and you are rocking Yolanda.
Then, he comes to you. The reality that all three of you are under death threat sinks in. All three of you cry, rock and pray.
The next day, the local newspaper, The Montgomery Advertiser, publishes your house address in the news article about your attempted murder.
Question: Does the sympathy of any White mother in Montgomery provide you any comfort or soothing?
How does a White mother’s apology for the stress you have to live under LAND in you?
